Let’s speculate a little bit about scientific and near-scientific aspects of candle magic.
First and foremost, if you believe in magic and witchcraft, it’s okay; if you don’t believe, it’s also okay. Both ways are just about belief, not science. There are no scientific facts that can prove existence or nonexistence of magic.
The Basics of Candle Magic
Candles have an extremely extensive history in witchcraft and many other forms of folk magic all around the world. Candle magic has been practiced in spiritual and magic rituals since ancient times.
There are several reasons that witches, magicians and even regular people are using candles in spells and rituals. The rituals with candles are not complicated and the candles are not expensive. The variety of problems people are going to solve with the help of candle magic is huge: health issues, spirituality, success, harmonizing relationship, prosperity and abundance … You can create your own purpose of candle magic.
Ritually charged candles are excellent for beginners or for people who are not interested in becoming a witch or a magician, but want to use candle magic for some personal goals. Even experience witches turn to support their spell with special candles. The best results could be achieved with the use of ritually charged candles made of beeswax.
When a candle is used for a spell, it should be burned to the end. The spell should be repeated 3, 9 or other number of times, multiple by 3. The spell should be secured by the person who is doing it. The traces of the candle and other materials (if there are some) should be removed from your house after the ritual is finished. For better results, the energy of some special days of the year or month can be selected.
Nowadays, candle magic is one of the most used forms of witchcraft. Candles can differ in size, colour, shape and burning time. They can contain herbs, flowers, stones, money, essential oils or other materials. A candle may have a scent or may be unscented.
Candle Flame Science
Now, we are talking pure physics. No magic.
Candle flame temperature
The size of the candle flame and corresponding rate of burning is controlled largely by the candle wick. A candle flame is formed because wax vaporizes on burning. It has three distinct zones:
- The darkest zone – the innermost zone, directly above the wick
- The yellow and luminous zone – the middle zone
- The outer zone – it’s where the flame is the hottest and complete combustion of wax takes place; it’s light blue in color and not normally visible
The thermal structure of a flame is complex, hundreds of degrees over very short distances leading to extremely steep temperature gradients. On average, the flame temperature is about 1,000°C. The hottest part of a candle flame is just above the very dull blue part to one side of the flame, at the base. At this point, the flame is about 1,400°C.
Very hot flames are hot enough to have ionized gaseous components of sufficient density to be considered plasma [1].
Plasma
Plasma is one of the four fundamental states of matter, and was first described by chemist Irving Langmuir in the 1920s. Unlike the other three states, solid, liquid, and gas, plasma does not exist freely on the Earth’s surface under normal conditions. Plasma can be artificially generated by heating or subjecting a neutral gas to a strong electromagnetic field [2].
Plasma can transport electromagnetic waves
Plasma that is excited by propagation of electromagnetic surface waves is called surface-wave-sustained. The surface wave mode allows to generate uniform high-frequency-excited plasmas in volumes whose lateral dimensions extends over several wavelengths of the electromagnetic wave [3].
Human Brain Can Generate Electromagnetic Waves
A thought is a material thing. It’s energy. In physics, energy-mass equivalence states that anything having energy has an equivalent amount of mass (and vice versa). These fundamental quantities directly relating to one another by Albert Einstein’s famous formula: E = mc2 . This formula states that the equivalent energy (E) can be calculated as the mass (m) multiplied by the speed of light (c) squared.
So, remaining entirely in the physical, our thoughts are energy that is being transmitted by the mind. The human brain does emit waves. At the root of all our thoughts, emotions and behaviours is the communication between neurons within our brains. Brainwaves are produced by synchronized electrical pulses from thousands of neurons simultaneously. They are detected using sensors placed on the scalp. There are five types of brain waves: delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma. They are divided into bandwidths to describe their functions but actually they are a continuous spectrum of consciousness; from slow, loud and functional – to fast, subtle, and complex [4, 5].
Near-Scientific Speculations on How Candle Magic Works
And now let’s try to put everything together:
- Candle flame can produce plasma
- Your brain can generate thoughts (means wishes) as electromagnetic waves
- While focusing on your wish and constantly looking at the candle flame, you apply your thoughts on plasma
- Plasma can transport your wishes to … the haven kitchen to get your order cooked and delivered to you in a while, like in a restaurant. Smile.
Hope you have enjoyed that brief introduction to the mysterious world of candle magic.
