Starting on January 1, 2020, the limit to make a Claim in the Ontario Small Claims Court, increased from $25,000 to $35,000 CAN.

Before that date, the maximum amount allowed to claim was $ 25,000 CAN, implemented on January 1, 2010.

The idea behind this decision is to give opportunity to all individuals to have a more economic and faster way to solve their challenges using less expensive representation i.e.: paralegals, Law students or representing themselves.

Included in the decision, was the option to transfer claims that were filed in Superior Court before December 2019 as long as the amounts are over $25,000 and do not exceed $35,000 CAN. All parties involved have to agree about the transfer.

In addition, the minimum amount of a Claim that can be appealed to Division Court was also increased from $ 2,500 to $ 3,500 CAN.
