Visitor to Canada Medical Insurance Plans

Your family or friends from your motherland got a visa to visit you in Canada? Congratulations! However, you have to realize that visitors are not covered by OHIP – Ontario Health Insurance Plans, so getting medical insurance for your visitors is almost as important as their visas to Canada. You don’t want the people you love facing significant out-of-pocket expenses if a medical emergency occurs while they are in Canada, do you?

There are different visitor medical insurance policies available, which are specially designed for Canada visitors to suit a spectrum of their needs and budgets. Emergency medical coverage is the most important component of them: only one toll-free call at any time of the day puts you in contact with a professional who will guide you to receive the care you need.

Visitor medical insurance plans can be purchased prior to or upon arrival in Canada. If a visitor medical insurance plan is bought after arrival in Canada, a waiting period applies:

  • 48-hour waiting period if the insurance is bought within 30 days of arrival in Canada
  • 8-day waiting period if the insurance is bought more than 30 days after arrival in Canada

Visitor medical insurance plans can be of two basic types – single-trip plans and multi-trip plans and they can provide up to $25,000 of travel accident insurance, as well as up to $150,000 coverage of the eligible emergency medical expenses.

The main benefits of medical insurance plans for visitors to Canada cover the following:

  • visiting a doctor
  • hospital stays
  • medical diagnostic tests
  • prescription drugs

If you have not reported or initiated a claim, you might get a refund if you cancel your policy BEFORE the effective date of insurance.
